A new EU compass and a major ESG revision: What does the March Enviro News Alert bring?

Legislative changes, new requirements, but also points of interest that you should not miss. Every month, the Enviro News Alert brings you an overview of changes that affect business, industry and sustainability. Experts from Eversheds Sutherland, in cooperation with the Association of Industrial Unions and Transport, monitor for you what is changing and what it is good to be prepared for.

The EU sets a new course: A compass for competitiveness and sustainable prosperity
In the March Enviro News Alert from Eversheds Sutherland, you will also learn that in January 2025 the European Commission presented the EU Compass initiative to restore competitiveness and achieve sustainable prosperity. It rests on three pillars:
- Closing the innovation gap – The Commission will support innovation by facilitating the establishment of start-ups and through investments in infrastructure and research. It plans, for example, legislation on innovation and the use of artificial intelligence.
- A joint plan for decarbonisation and competitiveness – The aim of this pillar is in particular to integrate decarbonisation policies into industrial, economic and trade policy, to facilitate access to affordable energy and to support producers of clean technologies.
- The Commission has already prepared the Clean Industrial Deal, which brings concrete steps for the decarbonisation and strengthening of European industry. It focuses on affordable energy, support for the circular economy and the financing of the transition to clean technologies.
Reducing dependence and increasing security – It focuses on the security and strategic autonomy of the EU. It plans, for example, the preparation of a white paper on European defence and the joint procurement of critical raw materials.
Each of the pillars is further supplemented by horizontal factors: simplification, removal of barriers on the single market, financing, skills and quality jobs, better coordination.
